Unification – The “Greens”

Spread the love
work dress with beret on left, dress tunic with peaked cap on the right, ship’s company picture in green uniforms in the centre

In 1969, the year after the RCN, Canadian Army and RCAF were amalgamated to form the Canadian Armed Forces, the process of introducing a common rifle green uniform for all elements and ranks began.  Navy ranks and rank badges were replaced with army ones and the RCN became Maritime Command.

The reaction of the navy to green uniforms is best summed up in a verse of the song, “Wavy Navy”

O we joined for the chance to wear the blue,

Yes we joined for the chance to wear the blue,

But they put us all in green

And the green is so obscene

Roll along, Wavy Navy, roll along.

The green uniform lasted only fifteen years and disappeared without regret, being replaced by DEU (Distinctive Environmental Uniforms) in 1984.

Our display consists of two mannequins, one in the tunic of a Lieutenant, although at the time he would have been called a Captain, with straight stripes, the anchor collar dogs and a Maritime Command badge on the pocket, and the other in a work dress shirt and jacket with beret.
