Requiescat in pace – Cdr Mary Alice Greenwood, CD, RN

1926 – 8 March 2019

Mary joined the RCN in 1944 as a nursing assistant. After the war, she qualified as a nurse and joined the RCN(R) as a SLt at HMCS YORK, later transferring to STAR. In 1962, she became the first woman naval reservist to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In civilian life, she was a nurse at Hamilton General Hospital. Mary, along with Surgeon Captain Hugh McCoy, was the mainstay of the Medical Department at HMCS STAR for years. Fondly remembered.

A serious looking Mary as a Commander in greens.
A more jovial Mary at a wardroom sing-along in blues.

There will be a Time of Remembrance at Woods Park Care Centre, 110 Lilian Crescent, Barrie on Sunday 28 April 2019 at 14:00 with interment at Dunk’s Bay Cemetery, Tobermory.
