Sea Cadets

In 1895, concern over the naval race between Britain and Germany led to the formation of an organization called the Navy League.  A charter was granted to a branch in Toronto on December 16th of that year.    Early on, branches began informally supporting youth organizations to encourage boys to follow a career in the navy or merchant navy.  Originally called Boy’s Naval Brigades, they became Navy League Sea Cadets in 1923 and Royal Canadian Sea Cadets in 1943.  While the exact date of the foundation of the organization is unknown and RCSCC LION in Hamilton claims a formation date of 1917, the Navy League of Canada is celebrating the centennial of Sea Cadets during 2018.
