2nd – The Commonwealth STARR – Battle of Dover 1652

STARR, a sixteen gun ship, 130 tons builders measurement, bought 1643 and sold 1652, was part of the English fleet during the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell from 1649 to 1660.  As part of an English squadron under Admiral Robert Blake, took part in an action against the Dutch under Admiral Marten Tromp in May 0f 1652.  When the Dutch refused to salute the new Commonwealth flag, a warning shot from the English squadron was answered with a broadside from the Dutch.  After a five hour engagement, the Dutch withdrew.  STAR was awarded the battle honour “Dover 1652“.
